Dhonfanu Thila rises from the deep waters of Shaviyani Atoll in the northern Maldives, offering intermediate divers an outstanding pinnacle dive that combines accessible conditions with the kind of marine encounters that make Maldivian diving legendary. This submerged reef formation reaches thirty meters at its base while its summit sits comfortably within recreational diving limits, creating a vertical playground where every depth band offers different species and experiences. The thila's structure follows the classic Maldivian pinnacle form, a roughly cylindrical reef rising from the sandy atoll floor with steep sides that support distinct ecological zones at different depths. Approaching from above, the summit appears as a dark mass against the lighter sandy bottom, its outline ringed by clouds of fish that hover above the reef like a living halo. Anthias dominate the summit's airspace, their orange and pink bodies so numerous they seem to create a warm glow around the reef's highest point. Descending along the thila's flanks reveals the depth-dependent zonation that makes pinnacle dives so rewarding. The upper sections bask in strong tropical sunlight, supporting vigorous hard coral growth dominated by branching Acropora species and encrusting forms that paint the rock in shades of brown, green, and purple. Butterflyfish flit between coral heads in their characteristic bouncing flight pattern, while angelfish drift more sedately, their vivid markings catching the eye at every turn. The middle depths of Dhonfanu Thila transition to a zone where soft corals begin to dominate. Dendronephthya colonies in shades of crimson and violet bloom from the wall, their translucent tissue revealing the internal skeletal structure when backlit by a dive torch. Gorgonian fans grow perpendicular to the prevailing current, their flat profiles maximizing exposure to the plankton-laden water flowing past the thila. Among these soft coral forests, longnose hawkfish perch on gorgonian branches, their alert posture and quick movements making them a favorite subject for macro photographers. The deeper sections of the thila attract the site's larger visitors. Whitetip reef sharks rest on sandy ledges at the base of the pinnacle, while grey reef sharks cruise the perimeter in slow, deliberate circuits. Schools of fusiliers stream past in dense formations, their collective movement creating patterns that shift and flow like an underwater murmuration. Turtles are regularly encountered here, particularly hawksbills that seem to favor the sponge-rich sections of the thila's northern face. Dhonfanu Thila captures the essence of what makes Shaviyani Atoll such a rewarding destination for divers seeking high-quality experiences away from the more crowded central Maldivian atolls. The combination of healthy reef systems, diverse marine life, and comfortable diving conditions creates an experience that resonates with both the mind and the memory.
