JC's Runway is a distinctive dive site near Gaya Island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, named for the long, flat sandy stretch that resembles an underwater landing strip extending from the reef's edge. Located just minutes by boat from Kota Kinabalu's Jesselton Point jetty, this beginner-friendly site combines easy diving conditions with a unique topography that sets it apart from the park's other coral-dominated sites. The namesake runway is a broad expanse of white sand that cuts through the reef system, creating clear lanes between coral formations. This sandy corridor serves as a natural highway for marine life, and divers who position themselves along its edges are treated to a parade of creatures traversing the open ground. Stingrays glide along the runway with effortless grace, their flat bodies rippling like underwater carpets. Cuttlefish hover above the sand, changing color and texture in their hypnotic displays. Garden eels emerge from their burrows in the sandy stretches, their slender bodies swaying like grass in a breeze, though they retreat with remarkable speed if you approach too quickly. The coral formations flanking the runway are healthy and diverse, providing the structural complexity that supports the site's rich biodiversity. Hard corals predominate, with table corals forming broad platforms that create shaded habitats beneath their spreading canopies. Staghorn coral thickets offer refuge to schools of damselfish and chromis, while boulder corals provide the solid foundation upon which the rest of the reef community builds. What makes JC's Runway particularly enjoyable is the contrast between the two environments. Divers can alternate between exploring the coral gardens with their concentrated marine life and cruising along the sandy runway where visibility extends impressively and larger creatures are easier to spot against the pale backdrop. This dual character means the site never feels repetitive, even on multiple visits. The shallow, protected conditions characteristic of the marine park ensure comfortable diving throughout the experience. Currents are typically minimal, and visibility in the lagoon waters around Gaya Island is often surprisingly good, especially during the calmer months between March and October. These forgiving conditions make JC's Runway popular for dive courses, but experienced divers will find plenty to appreciate in the macro life hiding among the coral and the open-water encounters along the sandy stretches. As one of several excellent sites within easy reach of Kota Kinabalu, JC's Runway contributes to making Sabah's capital one of Southeast Asia's most convenient dive destinations. The combination of proximity to urban amenities and genuine underwater quality is rare, and sites like this demonstrate that extraordinary marine encounters do not require days of travel to reach remote archipelagos.
