Tanjung Lagoon

Tanjung Lagoon occupies a sheltered position along Gaya Island's coastline within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, creating one of the calmest and most beginner-friendly dive environments near Kota Kinabalu. The lagoon setting provides natural protection from waves and currents, making this site an ideal choice for newly certified divers, refresher courses, and anyone who appreciates being able to explore at a leisurely pace without battling the elements. The underwater landscape at Tanjung Lagoon is characterized by a mosaic of habitats compressed into a relatively compact area. Coral patches alternate with sandy clearings and rubble zones, each supporting its own community of marine residents. This variety means that even a single dive can encompass remarkably different ecosystems, from dense coral thickets alive with small reef fish to open sandy expanses where rays rest and gobies maintain their burrows. The coral growth in the lagoon's protected waters is notably healthy, with excellent coverage of both hard and soft species. Massive brain corals and mushroom corals anchor the reef structure, while branching corals fill the gaps between them, creating a complex three-dimensional habitat. Encrusting sponges in orange, purple, and yellow add unexpected color to the rocky substrate, and feather stars perch atop elevated coral heads, their delicate arms spread wide to filter passing nutrients from the water. Marine life in the lagoon is abundant and approachable. The calm conditions seem to put fish at ease, and many species allow closer observation than they would at more exposed sites. Clownfish families occupy their anemone homes with characteristic territorial enthusiasm, boldly approaching divers who venture too close. Schools of cardinalfish hover beneath table coral overhangs, their large eyes adapted to the lower light in these miniature caves. Pipefish thread their way through coral branches, their elongated bodies remarkably difficult to spot despite being right in front of you. The sandy areas within the lagoon deserve careful attention. Juvenile cuttlefish are sometimes found here, hovering above the bottom with their tentacles arranged in perfect symmetry. Flounder and sole lie perfectly camouflaged on the sandy substrate, revealed only by the slight outline of their bodies and the patient scanning of an attentive eye. Sea cucumbers process the sand in their slow, methodical way, playing their unglamorous but essential role in the reef ecosystem. Tanjung Lagoon's accessibility from Kota Kinabalu, combined with its forgiving conditions and diverse marine life, makes it one of the marine park's most versatile dive sites. It serves equally well as an introduction to Borneo's underwater world for newcomers and as a relaxed afternoon dive for experienced divers seeking calm conditions and easy macro photography opportunities.
