Kau Point is an intermediate dive site in Wellington Harbour, reaching 22 meters along the eastern shore near the entrance to the harbor. This rocky headland provides some of the best diving within the harbor itself, where the Cook Strait's influence delivers nutrient-rich water that supports diverse marine communities on the reef systems extending from the point. The underwater terrain features volcanic rock formations extending from the headland into deeper water, creating walls, boulders, and reef structures that provide varied habitat. The intermediate rating reflects manageable conditions that include moderate current potential and the depth range that requires attentive dive planning. The site's position near the harbor entrance means it benefits from cleaner oceanic water than the inner harbor receives. Kelp forests frame the shallower sections of the dive, creating the atmospheric temperate woodland environment where light filters through swaying fronds and marine life shelters in the canopy. The deeper rock formations support the diverse encrusting community typical of nutrient-rich Wellington waters, with sponges in multiple colors, jewel anemones, and various colonial organisms creating visual interest throughout the depth range. Marine life at Kau Point is impressive for an urban harbor location. Blue cod, spotty wrasse, and various reef species inhabit the rocky sections, while crayfish shelter in crevices along the walls. Octopuses are frequently encountered, and nudibranchs add vivid macro interest. The proximity to the harbor entrance means occasional visits from species moving between the open Cook Strait and the sheltered harbor. Kau Point offers intermediate-level Wellington divers one of the harbor's most rewarding dive experiences, where the interaction between ocean and harbor creates productive marine habitat within easy reach of the city.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
