Scorching Bay is a beginner-friendly dive site on the eastern side of the Miramar Peninsula in Wellington, reaching just 8 meters in the sheltered waters of this popular swimming beach. The shallow depth and protected position create one of Wellington's most accessible dive sites, ideal for new divers, training activities, and relaxed recreational diving in the capital city. The sheltered bay provides calm conditions that are consistently among the most forgiving in the Wellington area. The underwater terrain features sandy bottom with scattered rocky reef, kelp patches, and the mix of habitats that characterizes the harbor's eastern shoreline. The 8-meter maximum depth ensures excellent natural lighting and minimal air consumption concerns, allowing extended dive times focused on observation and skill practice. Marine life at Scorching Bay is surprisingly varied for such a shallow, urban site. Spotty wrasse, triplefins, and various goby species inhabit the rocky sections, while seahorses have been recorded in the seagrass areas, making careful searching through the habitat particularly rewarding. Octopuses are frequent residents among the rocks, and the macro life including nudibranchs and various crustaceans provides interest for detail-oriented divers. The site's accessibility from central Wellington and its consistently calm conditions make Scorching Bay one of the most frequently dived sites in the capital, serving as the starting point for many Wellington diving careers.
