Arena is an intermediate dive site off the Caniçal peninsula in eastern Madeira — a site whose name means 'sand' in Portuguese, referring to the sandy bottom environment that characterizes this area of Madeira's eastern coast and creates a distinct diving experience different from the lava wall and arch dives of the island's more exposed western coast. The Caniçal area is one of Madeira's most productive diving zones, and Arena's combination of sandy bottom and rocky reef patches creates the habitat diversity that supports an impressive community of species adapted to both substrate types. The sandy bottom at Arena is far from featureless: blue-spotted rays partially buried against the sediment are characteristic and reliably encountered, their spotted upper surface providing camouflage that only fails when their disc shape betrays their outline against the pale sand. Cephalopods are well represented in sandy environments like Arena — common octopus hunt over the sandy bottom with their colour-changing camouflage, and the occasional European cuttlefish performs its mesmerizing chromatophore display. Garden eels extend from their burrows in formation in the calmer sections. At the rocky reef patches, the Atlantic fish community typical of Madeiran waters takes over: grouper, damselfish, and various bream species occupy the hard substrate. The endemic Madeiran sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus covers exposed rock surfaces. The occasional loggerhead sea turtle passes through the area — Madeira lies within the Atlantic's main loggerhead migration corridor. The intermediate rating reflects the depth and Atlantic conditions, with appropriate experience required for comfortable diving in the productive but sometimes surge-affected eastern Madeiran coastal zone.
