Lava Finger at Galomar is one of the most distinctive beginner dive sites in eastern Madeira — a site named for a finger-like lava formation extending from the Galomar coastline into the clear Atlantic waters of Madeira's southern shore within the Garajau Natural Reserve. The Galomar area hosts several named dive sites that collectively explore the varied volcanic reef formations of this protected section of coast, and Lava Finger provides one of the most visually distinctive features — a natural lava column or ridge projecting from the reef structure in a form that guides diver navigation and concentrates marine life along its length. The Garajau Natural Reserve's decades of protection have created the exceptional fish community that makes diving in this section of Madeira so rewarding: large grouper approach divers with remarkable confidence; bream and wrasse schools orbit the reef in dense formations; and the endemic Madeiran chromis hover above the lava formations in characteristic groups. The lava finger formation itself creates a natural reference line for dive navigation and a habitat edge that concentrates species seeking the structural shelter of a prominent vertical feature in otherwise open water. Mediterranean moray eels occupy the deeper crevices of the lava formation. Ray species including torpedo rays rest on sandy patches between lava features. The clear, blue water of Madeira's southern coast — typically achieving 20 to 30 meters of visibility on calm days — renders every detail of the volcanic formation and its resident marine life in vivid detail. The site is accessible by shore entry from the Galomar area with the guidance of local dive operators based in the Caniço diving community.
