Azul House Reef is the beginner-accessible house reef of a Madeira dive center — a shore dive site in the Caniço/Garajau area of Madeira's southern coast that provides easy, convenient access to the volcanic reef ecosystem typical of the Garajau Natural Reserve, one of Europe's oldest marine protected areas. The Garajau Natural Reserve, established in 1986, protects a stretch of Madeiran coastline and its underwater environment from fishing and collecting, with the result that the marine life within its boundaries is notably denser and more diverse than in unprotected areas. The house reef begins just offshore from the dive center in shallow, calm water and extends to comfortable beginner depths over lava rock formations colonized by the Atlantic reef community of the Macaronesian islands. The site's protected status within the Garajau reserve means the fish community is unusually approachable and unafraid of divers — large grouper hover at close range, colorful schools of wrasse and bream move slowly through the reef without the quick-retreat behavior typical of hunted species, and the Mediterranean moray eels that occupy the lava crevices peer out with the relaxed demeanor of animals that have never been disturbed. Madeiran chromis hover in formations above the reef. Various ray species including torpedo rays are occasionally encountered. The clear, cobalt-blue water of Madeira's south coast provides the visibility that makes this reef dive genuinely rewarding regardless of experience level. The combination of the Garajau reserve's protection, the convenience of house reef access, and the quality of the Madeiran marine environment makes Azul House Reef an excellent introduction to Macaronesian Atlantic diving.
