Ponta do Garajau is one of Madeira's most dramatic and iconic advanced dive sites — the headland at the heart of the Garajau Natural Reserve where the volcanic geology of the island creates a spectacular underwater cape with dramatic walls, channels, and open-water sections that are among the finest dives on the island. The reserve's namesake point — garajau means common tern in Portuguese, and these seabirds still nest on the headland above — marks the boundary between two sections of the reserve and generates the current patterns that make this section of the southern coast so productive. Divers who venture to Ponta do Garajau on advanced conditions find some of the most impressive fish life in all of Madeiran waters: the combined effect of the Garajau reserve's protection, the productive Atlantic current around the headland, and the complex underwater topography creates a fish community of exceptional density and individual size. Large grouper — Atlantic grouper and dusky grouper — approach divers with the confidence of animals that have never been hunted, hovering at arm's length with the casual authority of apex predators. Schools of Atlantic barracuda hold position in the current shadow of the headland. Blue sharks and hammerhead sharks have been reported in the open water around the point on exceptional days. Mediterranean moray eels and various ray species complete the picture. The advanced rating reflects the depth, surge, and current that develop around this exposed headland cape, requiring proper experience and dive planning for a safe and rewarding experience. Local Madeira dive operators are essential guides for this site.
