Ilhéu da Forja is a beginner dive site off a small islet on the coast of Madeira — one of the volcanic islets that dot Madeira's coastline and whose underwater bases provide excellent diving in the clear, relatively protected waters on the island's lee side. Small islets like Ilhéu da Forja create sheltered diving zones on their leeside where the main Atlantic swell is blocked, while the current sweeping around the islet brings nutrient-rich water that supports productive fish communities. The volcanic rock formation of the islet descends underwater in a series of lava formations, caves, and crevices that have been colonized over decades by the Atlantic reef community of the Macaronesian region. The beginner rating reflects the calm conditions and moderate depth accessible on the protected side of the islet, making this an excellent introductory site for divers new to Madeiran waters. The fish community typical of Madeira's rocky reef environment is well represented: large schools of bream and salema porgy orbit the islet; wrasse species — including the beautiful rainbow wrasse in multiple color phases — work the rocky surfaces; and the Madeiran chromis endemic to these Atlantic islands hovers in characteristic formations above the reef. Mediterranean moray eels occupy the deeper crevices of the lava formation. The occasional loggerhead sea turtle passes through — Madeira's waters sit within the North Atlantic loggerhead migration route, and turtle sightings here carry the weight of understanding these animals' oceanic journeys. The clear blue Atlantic water and the dramatic visual character of the volcanic islet formation create diving of genuine aesthetic beauty even at beginner depths.
