Taking its name from its proximity to a coastal hotel on the southern shore of São Miguel, Arcos do Hotel is a sister site to Caloura's arch system — another volcanic basalt dive structured around the natural archways and passages that make São Miguel's underwater coastline so architecturally compelling. The dive begins on a reef flat at around eight to ten metres, where the basalt formations are encrusted with the colourful Atlantic organisms that characterise Azorean diving. The water here, drawing from the productive mid-Atlantic, is consistently clear — typical visibility of fifteen to twenty-five metres makes the site's arches visible from a distance as dark openings in the rock face. The approach to the arches is itself rewarding: the basalt walls slope and drop through an irregular landscape of ledges and overhangs, each providing habitat for different species. The arches at this site have a distinctive character: some are broad swim-throughs with ample light filtering from above, while others are narrower passages requiring single-file navigation and providing the brief, exhilarating experience of swimming through enclosed volcanic rock before emerging on the other side. In the dimmer sections, the quality of bioluminescent sponge and bryozoan species becomes apparent, adding an ethereal quality to the experience. The fish community at Arcos do Hotel includes strong representation from Atlantic species that divers with tropical experience will find refreshingly unfamiliar: the bold colouration of Azorean wrasse varieties, the impressive bulk of Atlantic dusky grouper presiding over reef territories, and the constant movement of bream schools circling overhead. Morays are numerous here, as they are throughout São Miguel's rocky dive sites, occupying crevices at all depths with characteristic aplomb. Intermediate divers with comfort in Atlantic conditions — somewhat cooler temperatures than tropical destinations, seasonal swell, and occasionally reduced visibility after storms — will find Arcos do Hotel an exceptionally rewarding site showcasing the volcanic beauty of the Azores.
