Capelas is a village on the northern coast of São Miguel, its fishing harbour opening onto the more exposed, current-influenced waters of the island's north side. Bahia de Capelas — Capelas Bay — takes advantage of this exposure, offering a more dynamic diving environment than the sheltered southern shore sites, with the rewards in marine life density and encounter quality that productive current typically brings. The bay's basalt formations descend from the shoreline in a complex topography of walls, boulders, and sandy corridors, ranging from eight to around twenty-five metres at this intermediate site. The volcanic rock is colonised by the richly textured Atlantic encrusting community of the Azores, but with an added dimension: the productive north-coast current delivers nutrients in abundance, encouraging the growth of dense soft coral and anemone communities that thrive in higher-flow environments. The marine life at Capelas Bay is characteristically Azorean but with a distinctive energy. Schools of Atlantic chub orbit in open water, their solid silver forms cutting through the blue in coordinated circuits. Large amberjack patrol the deeper sections, occasionally cutting through a school of smaller fish with decisive speed. Common octopus are extraordinarily numerous in this rocky environment — their intelligence and camouflage make spotting them a genuine skill, and finding a large individual pressed against the basalt in near-perfect mimicry of its background is one of the specific pleasures of Azorean diving. Dive guides familiar with the bay can direct groups to seasonal highlights: in summer months, large pelagic species including blue sharks are possible in open water off the bay's entrance, and mobula rays aggregate in Azorean waters during warm months. Even outside peak pelagic seasons, Bahia de Capelas is a productive, beautiful dive in the dramatic setting of São Miguel's volcanic northern coastline. Intermediate divers should be prepared for Atlantic water temperatures and variable swell conditions on this exposed coast.
