Ilheu Leste — the Eastern Islet — is a dive site off one of the small rocky islets that punctuate São Miguel's coastline, offering intermediate divers one of the island's most characteristically Azorean reef experiences. These minor islets are geological features of particular interest: exposed volcanic intrusions that rise from the seafloor, their submerged bases creating complex rocky terrain at diveable depths. The site sits on the eastern aspect of its respective islet, a position that typically means calmer water than the windward faces and good afternoon light filtering through the blue Atlantic water. The underwater landscape at Ilheu Leste is a study in volcanic architecture. The basalt that forms the islet extends beneath the surface in a series of ledges, crevices, and boulder fields that create the multi-level terrain characteristic of Azorean reef diving. Moving down from the surface, the rock faces transition through successive communities of organisms: bright encrusting coralline algae and sponges dominate the upper, well-lit zones, while the deeper substrate supports the sea fans, cup corals, and cold-tolerant filter feeders that characterise the temperate Atlantic realm. Fish life around the islet is concentrated and varied. The rocky base attracts territorial species — ornate wrasse, comber, and various bream species hold stations on the reef and move through the water column in regular patterns. Moray eels occupy the deeper crevices. Schools of boops and chub mackerel use the islet as an orientation point in the open water, circling in loose formations that occasionally tighten when a predator arrives. In the blue water beyond the immediate rock structure, amberjack are regular visitors, and the proximity of open Atlantic means that larger pelagic species are always a possibility. One of the joys of islet diving in the Azores is the three-dimensional quality of the dive — the circumnavigation of a small geological feature that can be completed in a single dive, with different aspects revealing different communities and conditions. Ilheu Leste, being the eastern face, catches the morning light particularly well, which warms the water in the upper metres and illuminates the sponge communities in vivid colour. The intermediate depth and typically manageable current make it a site that can be dived comfortably within the middle of a week of Azores diving, neither a warm-up nor a maximum-effort site.
