Poente — West — is a dive site on Terceira Island's western coastline, positioned to catch both the setting Atlantic light and the full force of the ocean swells that arrive from the northwest. The intermediate rating acknowledges that this is not the most sheltered of Terceira's dive sites, but that experienced intermediate divers with good buoyancy control and an understanding of ocean conditions will find it accessible and rewarding. The western exposure that occasionally complicates the dive also creates the current-rich conditions that make the marine life here particularly vibrant. The site consists of volcanic basalt formations typical of Terceira's coastline — boulder fields, low volcanic ridges, and sand channels that create a varied landscape at accessible depths. The western aspect means that the site receives good light throughout the morning dive window and into the early afternoon, illuminating the reef in warm Atlantic light filtered through the exceptionally clear Azores water. Visibility here regularly exceeds 25 metres, and on exceptional days the blue water clarity approaches 40 metres — the kind of visibility that gives the whole dive a spacious, luminous quality. The invertebrate life on the basalt at Poente reflects the current exposure. Filter feeders thrive in current-swept environments, and the walls and boulder faces at this site support dense communities of the organisms that exploit this food delivery mechanism. Sponges — encrusting, massive, and branching forms — cover exposed surfaces in vivid orange and yellow. Sea fans anchor to the vertical faces, their lacework fans facing the current. Feather stars spread their arms in feeding postures on the high points of the reef. The overall effect is of a reef in full productive mode, using the Atlantic's resources with efficient abundance. Fish at Poente include the robust species that characterise Terceira's current-exposed sites. Large comber and bream hold position behind rocks, using the formation to shelter from the flow while remaining close enough to intercept passing food. Striped red mullet probe the sandy channels with their sensitive barbels. Trumpet fish hover in characteristic vertical positions among sea fans. In the blue water above the reef, schools of Atlantic horse mackerel and boops pass in silver streams, and occasional larger species — amberjack, barracuda, or a passing blue shark — appear from the blue and retreat before you have quite processed what you saw. The name Poente reflects the orientation that makes this site special: watching the late afternoon light change the colour of the Atlantic from the surface after a dive here, with the western horizon open to the ocean and the island behind you, completes an experience that is as much about place as it is about the specific species or formations encountered underwater.
