The Azores archipelago, rising from the mid-Atlantic Ridge where tectonic plates converge, offers diving of a character found almost nowhere else on Earth: ancient volcanic basalt shaped by eruption and ocean erosion into dramatic tunnels, arches, and cavern systems, bathed in water that carries the clarity and richness of the open Atlantic. Terceira is one of the nine islands of this autonomous Portuguese region, and Silveira is a welcoming beginner dive on this volcanic coast. The site is a classic Azorean coastal dive: volcanic basalt formations sculpted into irregular shapes by centuries of ocean action, with walls, ledges, and small overhangs providing habitat variety at comfortable beginner depths. The rock is colonised by Atlantic-specific marine life — Azorean diving has a distinctly different character from the Mediterranean or tropical Atlantic, reflecting the island chain's mid-ocean position and the influence of both warm southern and cool northern water masses. Common sightings at Silveira include almaco jack and amberjack patrolling in open water, large schools of salema orbiting over the basalt formations, and the abundant Azorean chromis that fill the water column above the reef. Moray eels occupy the abundant rock crevices, and the encrusting life on the basalt — colourful sponges, anemones, and bryozoans — creates a surprisingly rich substrate with genuinely Atlantic character. The Azores are famous for encounters with large pelagic species, and while the great mobula ray aggregations and blue shark dives happen at specific seasons and sites, even beginner dives like Silveira can produce unexpected visitors: large common octopus are regular features of Azorean diving, and parrotfish appear here at the limits of their Atlantic range, adding a familiar tropical note to an otherwise distinctly temperate assemblage. Water temperature varies seasonally more than in tropical destinations — from around 16°C in winter to 24°C in summer — so a wetsuit of appropriate thickness is essential. The Azores offer outstanding value for divers seeking genuine adventure in pristine, wild Atlantic waters far from the beaten track.
