Kullen is a beginner-friendly dive site in the Öresund Strait that provides an accessible gateway to the remarkable underwater world where the Baltic Sea meets the North Sea. Located along the Swedish coast of the strait, this site offers sheltered conditions that allow newer divers to experience the unique brackish-water marine environment without facing the stronger currents that characterize more exposed Öresund locations. The entry is typically straightforward, with a gentle slope leading from shore into the waters of the strait. The bottom composition mixes sand with rocky patches, creating a varied landscape that supports diverse marine communities. Even at modest depths, the seabed reveals the fascinating ecological character of the Öresund, where species from both the Atlantic and the Baltic coexist in a brackish blend found nowhere else in quite the same way. The rocky areas at Kullen are decorated with marine growth typical of the strait's unique conditions. Algae and hydroids coat the stones, while mussels and barnacles compete for attachment space. Between the rocks, small fish dart for cover as divers approach, and patient observation reveals crabs, shrimp, and the occasional well-camouflaged flatfish resting on the sandy patches. The transition zones between rock and sand are particularly productive areas where predators hunt along the habitat boundaries. Visibility at Kullen varies with conditions in the strait. On good days the water clarity can be surprisingly pleasant, allowing you to appreciate the full scope of the rocky reef structure and its inhabitants. During periods of strong current or plankton bloom, visibility decreases, but even on reduced-visibility days the site rewards close inspection of the substrate where macro life thrives regardless of water clarity. The Öresund Strait holds special significance for marine biology. Despite its narrow width between Sweden and Denmark, the strait functions as an ecological corridor connecting two very different marine environments. Species diversity here is higher than you might expect for such northern waters, and every dive at Kullen offers the chance to observe this unique biogeographic mixing zone firsthand. For newer divers, Kullen provides excellent training conditions while still offering genuinely interesting marine life to discover. The sheltered nature of the site means you can focus on developing your buoyancy control and underwater awareness without worrying about strong currents pulling you off course. The depths remain moderate, and the proximity to shore means you are never far from a comfortable exit. Kullen is best dived during the warmer months from May through October, when water temperatures are most tolerable and biological activity peaks. A seven-millimeter wetsuit or drysuit is standard equipment for these waters. The site can be combined with exploration of other Öresund locations for a full day of diving that showcases the diversity of this fascinating strait.
