Ön is a beginner-friendly dive site in the Öresund Strait that provides an accessible entry point to exploring the fascinating underwater environment where the Baltic Sea and the North Sea exchange waters. This sheltered location along the Swedish coast of the strait offers calm conditions suitable for newer divers while still delivering the unique ecological experience that makes Öresund diving special. The entry at Ön is straightforward, allowing divers to wade in from shore and begin their exploration without the complications of boat diving. The bottom slopes gradually from the shoreline, giving beginners the comfort of a progressive depth increase where they can adjust their buoyancy and settle into the dive at their own pace. Sandy patches alternate with rocky areas, creating a mosaic of habitats within easy reach of the entry point. The rocky sections at Ön support thriving communities of marine organisms adapted to the strait's distinctive brackish conditions. Algae and kelp species anchor to the stone surfaces, their fronds providing shelter and food for countless smaller creatures. Among the rocky crevices, blennies and gobies make their homes, peering out at passing divers with the alert curiosity that makes these small fish favorites among underwater observers. Crabs forage openly on the substrate, while nudibranchs add unexpected color to the predominantly green and brown palette. The sandy areas between the rocks have their own attractions. Flatfish lie camouflaged against the bottom, revealed only by the outline of their eyes or a sudden burst of movement when a diver approaches too closely. Shrimp hover just above the sand, and the tracks and traces of bottom-dwelling creatures create patterns that tell the story of the seabed's daily activity. These transitions between habitat types concentrate biodiversity, making the boundaries between rock and sand the most productive areas to explore. The Öresund's unique water chemistry creates conditions found nowhere else. The mixing of salty North Sea water with the fresher Baltic produces stratification effects that can be visible during dives, with distinct layers of different clarity and temperature. These haloclines and thermoclines are fascinating natural phenomena that add a dimension of physical oceanography to the biological interest of the site. Ön is well suited for training dives, refresher sessions, and relaxed exploration. The combination of easy access, sheltered conditions, and genuinely interesting marine life means it serves multiple purposes equally well. Underwater photographers will find plenty of macro subjects among the rocks, while those working on skills appreciate the forgiving environment that allows concentration on technique without environmental stress. Diveable throughout the warmer months from May through October, Ön offers its best conditions during summer when water temperatures reach their annual peak and the marine life is most active. Adequate thermal protection is always necessary in the Öresund, with most divers opting for drysuits to maximize comfort and extend bottom time in these northern waters.
