Bölskären is an intermediate dive site on Sweden's west coast, where an exposed group of skerries in the Bohuslän archipelago creates diving conditions that attract experienced cold-water divers seeking the richer marine life found at more current-exposed locations. The exposed position means that the marine growth and fish populations here often exceed those found at more sheltered sites. The skerries' position in open water exposes them to the nutrient-rich currents of the Skagerrak, creating conditions that support dense communities of filter-feeding organisms. The underwater rock surfaces are covered with a spectacular mosaic of anemones, soft corals, sponges, and encrusting organisms whose combined effect creates a colorful underwater landscape that contradicts the grey-water stereotype of Scandinavian diving. Kelp forests surround the skerries, their substantial fronds creating an underwater world of dappled light and gentle movement. The kelp provides habitat structure for the entire marine community, with fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates occupying every level of this living architecture. The forests are particularly impressive during summer and early autumn when growth is at its peak. Fish diversity at Bölskären reflects the productive conditions. Cod of respectable size patrol the deeper areas, while schools of pollack hunt smaller fish in coordinated groups. Wrasse species add their characteristic colors to the scene, and the various gobies and blennies that inhabit the rocky crevices provide engaging macro subjects. The intermediate classification reflects the exposed position and associated conditions including current and surface waves that require solid diving skills and experience. When conditions align, Bölskären delivers some of the best cold-water diving available on Sweden's celebrated west coast.
