Vattenholmen West is an intermediate dive site on Sweden's west coast, where the western face of this island in the Bohuslän archipelago provides diving with the current exposure and marine richness that make the Swedish west coast one of northern Europe's premier cold-water diving destinations. The western face receives the prevailing weather and current, creating conditions that support enhanced biological productivity. The underwater landscape on the western side features granite formations exposed to the Skagerrak's influence, with the rock surfaces colonized by dense communities of filter-feeding organisms. The biological growth here reflects the nutrient supply delivered by the westerly current, with anemones, soft corals, and sponges creating colorful displays on the grey granite substrate. Kelp forests surround the island, their substantial fronds creating the underwater woodland that provides structure for the entire marine ecosystem. The western exposure means that the kelp is adapted to the more energetic conditions on this side of the island, creating a robust and productive forest that supports diverse fish and invertebrate communities. Fish species include cod, pollack, and wrasse, with the western exposure occasionally attracting larger specimens and more active schooling behavior than sheltered eastern sites. The rocky crevices shelter lobsters and crabs, while shrimp dart through the kelp canopy. Vattenholmen West offers intermediate-level divers the opportunity to experience the enhanced marine life that the west-facing sites of the Bohuslän archipelago consistently deliver.
