Junkyard Reef is a beginner-friendly dive site off the western coast of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand, an artificial reef created from various structures deliberately placed on the sandy seabed to provide habitat for marine life and a training ground for divers. With a maximum depth of twelve meters, this quirky site combines the practicality of a training environment with the fascination of watching nature reclaim human objects. The site features an eclectic collection of structures deployed at various points across the sandy bottom. These may include concrete blocks, metal frames, vehicle parts, and purpose-designed reef modules, all chosen for their ability to provide substrate for marine colonization without introducing harmful materials into the environment. The result is an underwater landscape that looks like nothing else on Koh Tao, with artificial objects in various stages of marine takeover. Marine colonization has been enthusiastic, with coral fragments, sponges, and algae establishing themselves across the available surfaces. Fish have adopted the structures as territory, with damselfish, wrasse, and gobies among the early colonizers. Schools of snappers orbit the larger structures, and the growing complexity of the habitat attracts increasing diversity with each passing season. Anemones have established on several structures, bringing their clownfish residents along. The shallow depth and calm conditions make Junkyard Reef ideal for training dives and discover scuba experiences. The scattered structures provide natural navigation exercises, and the developing marine life gives students genuine underwater encounters during their first dives. The site's proximity to the shore adds convenience to its other advantages. Junkyard Reef demonstrates Koh Tao's creative approach to marine habitat creation. The transformation of discarded materials into thriving marine ecosystems provides both a practical diving resource and an inspiring example of nature's resilience and adaptability.
