Mushroom Rock is an advanced dive site near the Phi Phi Islands in the Andaman Sea, a distinctive underwater rock formation whose overhanging shape resembles a mushroom and creates one of the most atmospheric dive experiences in the archipelago. With a maximum depth of twenty-four meters and the current exposure typical of Phi Phi's outer sites, this formation offers dramatic topography and rich marine life for experienced divers. The mushroom-shaped rock creates a massive overhang that shelters marine life beneath its cap, with the underside decorated in soft corals, sponges, and encrusting organisms that thrive in the reduced light. Swimming beneath the overhang is an atmospheric experience, with the roof of marine growth above and the open water visible around the edges. Current exposure at the site brings nutrients that fuel the impressive marine growth and attract fish in considerable numbers. Schools of trevally and barracuda patrol the formation, while the sheltered spaces beneath the overhang concentrate smaller fish in dense aggregations. Leopard sharks may be found on the sandy areas nearby. Mushroom Rock adds a unique topographical feature to the Phi Phi diving portfolio. The combination of the distinctive formation, dramatic overhang, healthy marine growth, and the diverse fish life creates an advanced dive that is both visually striking and ecologically rich.
