Samaesan is a beginner-friendly dive area in the eastern Gulf of Thailand, located southeast of Pattaya near the small fishing village of Samaesan. This relatively under-the-radar destination offers a refreshing alternative to the busy tourist dive sites around Pattaya, with access to a cluster of small islands and offshore reefs that provide honest, unpretentious Gulf diving in an area where the marine environment benefits from lower diver traffic. The Samaesan area encompasses several dive sites around the islands and rocks that lie offshore, with boat rides typically taking just fifteen to thirty minutes from the local pier. The sheltered nature of the bay and surrounding waters provides calm conditions suitable for newer divers, and the relatively shallow reef profiles mean bottom times are generous. Local dive operations are smaller and more personal than the larger Pattaya-based outfits, offering a more intimate diving experience. The reefs around Samaesan feature a mix of hard and soft corals growing on rocky substrate. While the coral coverage is more modest than at Thailand's premier destinations, the reefs support a healthy and diverse community of marine organisms. Brain corals, mushroom corals, and encrusting species form the hard coral component, while soft corals and sea anemones add color and movement. The reefs benefit from their relatively low profile in the diving world, receiving less physical impact from diver contact. Fish life at Samaesan includes the species typical of the Gulf of Thailand's eastern shores. Schools of snappers and fusiliers provide mid-water movement, while damselfish and wrasse animate the reef sections. Moray eels inhabit the rocky crevices, and the sandy areas between reef patches harbor blue-spotted stingrays and various species of flatfish. During the right conditions, larger visitors including barracuda and cobia may pass through the area. The area's military history adds interest, as the Thai Navy has used these waters for training, and some military debris on the seabed has been colonized by marine life, creating small artificial reefs alongside the natural formations. These features add variety to the diving and provide additional habitat for fish and invertebrates. Visibility in the Samaesan area varies with tidal conditions and seasonal factors but can be reasonable during the dry season from November through April. The water is warmer than the Andaman Sea side, and conditions are generally calmer, making diving possible year-round though quality varies by season. Samaesan offers a genuine, unhurried diving experience for those who prefer authenticity over polish. The combination of accessible conditions, low diving pressure, and a local fishing village atmosphere makes it a rewarding destination for divers seeking to explore the quieter side of Thailand's Gulf coast.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
