Sarıyarlar, accessed through the Fethiye Diving Centre, is one of the Turquoise Coast's signature dive sites, a rocky underwater landscape that descends to thirty meters through some of the most varied and life-rich terrain in the Fethiye region. The site's name references the distinctive yellow-tinted stones that characterize the local geology, and this unique substrate creates an underwater environment that stands out visually from neighboring sites while supporting exceptional biodiversity. The dive at Sarıyarlar begins along a sloping reef that gradually steepens as depth increases, eventually forming walls and dramatic drop-offs that provide the vertical relief advanced divers seek. The yellow-hued rock that gives the site its name creates a warm, distinctive backdrop quite unlike the typical grey limestone of many Mediterranean dive sites. This geological signature makes Sarıyarlar immediately recognizable and provides an unusual canvas against which the marine life is beautifully displayed. Sponges in vivid oranges, reds, and purples contrast strikingly against the golden stone, creating a color palette that underwater photographers find exceptionally rewarding. The reef structure at Sarıyarlar offers tremendous topographical variety within a single dive. Boulder fields at intermediate depths create a maze of swim-throughs and passages, some wide enough for comfortable passage and others narrow enough to require careful fin technique. Overhangs and small caverns are scattered along the wall, each harboring its own community of shade-loving species. Deeper along the wall, the rock faces are decorated with impressive gorgonian sea fans that spread their delicate branches perpendicular to the prevailing current, maximizing their ability to capture passing food particles. Marine life at Sarıyarlar benefits from the site's position on an exposed section of coastline that receives reliable current flow. This water movement brings nutrients and planktonic food that supports an impressive food chain from the smallest invertebrates to the larger predatory fish that patrol the reef's outer edges. Grouper of notable size hold court among the deeper boulders, their unflappable demeanor allowing patient divers to approach quite closely for observation and photography. Moray eels are abundant, with multiple species occupying the countless crevices in the rocky terrain. Octopus demonstrate their remarkable problem-solving abilities as they navigate the reef, sometimes observed opening shells or rearranging the rocks around their dens. The mid-water column above Sarıyarlar's reef is equally active. Schools of bream and two-banded sea bream form dense aggregations that shimmer in the sunlight filtering down from above. Damselfish swarm the shallower sections with characteristic energy, while the more sedate movements of wrasse add a leisurely counterpoint. During summer months, the warm water brings increased activity from pelagic visitors, with amberjack and barracuda making appearances along the reef's outer edge that add a welcome element of unpredictability to every dive. The Fethiye Diving Centre's proximity to Sarıyarlar means that local guides know the site with intimate familiarity, able to navigate to the best features and seasonal highlights with practiced ease. This local knowledge transforms a good dive into an exceptional one, as guides lead divers to the hidden gems that casual visitors might overlook: the resident octopus den beneath a particular overhang, the section of wall where nudibranchs congregate, or the sandy patch where flatfish demonstrate their world-class camouflage. Visibility at Sarıyarlar is generally very good, with the exposed position and current flow maintaining water clarity throughout the primary diving season. Water temperatures peak in August and September, when conditions are most comfortable for extended dives. The site is diveable from May through November, with spring and autumn offering the most pleasant air temperatures and often the best underwater visibility. Sarıyarlar captures the essence of Turquoise Coast diving: warm, clear water over dramatic rocky reef, abundant Mediterranean marine life, and the kind of underwater scenery that makes every dive feel like an exploration of something genuinely beautiful.
