Sarıyarlar, known in English as Yellow Stones, is one of Fethiye's most distinctive and beloved dive sites, named for the remarkable golden-hued rock formations that give this stretch of underwater coastline its unique character. Descending to thirty meters through the clear waters of the Turquoise Coast, this intermediate site offers an experience that is visually unlike any other in the region, with the warm tones of the rock creating a striking backdrop for the vibrant Mediterranean marine life that calls these formations home. The yellow stones that define this site are the result of a particular local geology, where mineral content in the limestone has produced a distinctive warm coloration that ranges from pale gold to deep amber depending on the light conditions and depth. This geological signature is immediately apparent upon descent, as the familiar grey Mediterranean rock gives way to formations that seem to glow with their own internal light. The visual effect is enhanced by the typically excellent visibility at the site, which allows the golden rock to be appreciated from distance as well as close up. The reef at Sarıyarlar is structured around clusters of these distinctive rocks, which rise from a mixed rocky and sandy seabed in formations that create natural channels, overhangs, and sheltered areas. The topographical variety within the site means that a single dive can encompass a range of different environments, from open reef slopes where schools of fish cruise in the current to intimate rock formations where macro life hides in the crevices. The depth range is generous, with interesting features from the shallowest point down to the thirty-meter maximum, allowing divers to construct multilevel profiles that maximize both bottom time and variety. The marine life that inhabits the Yellow Stones reflects the health and productivity of this stretch of the Fethiye coast. The distinctive rock provides excellent substrate for the encrusting organisms that form the base of the reef ecosystem. Sponges are particularly abundant, their vivid oranges, purples, and reds creating dramatic color contrasts against the golden stone. These sponge communities support a rich invertebrate fauna, including nudibranchs that graze on specific sponge species, amphipods that shelter within the sponge matrix, and the occasional seahorse that uses sponges as anchor points. Fish life at Sarıyarlar is abundant and diverse. The reef supports healthy populations of grouper that have become accustomed to diver presence, allowing remarkably close observation of these intelligent, charismatic fish. Moray eels are regular occupants of the numerous crevices, and patient divers may observe the fascinating symbiotic relationship between morays and cleaner shrimp, with the tiny crustaceans working methodically over the eel's body. Schools of bream add flash and movement to the mid-water, while wrasse species in their various life stages demonstrate the remarkable color changes that occur as these fish mature. The intermediate difficulty level of Sarıyarlar makes it one of the most popular sites for divers progressing through their training in the Fethiye area. The depth and conditions provide an appropriate step up from the sheltered beginner sites without the current exposure and technical demands of the advanced locations. This accessibility has not diminished the site's quality, however, as the marine life remains abundant and the geological interest provides intellectual engagement that keeps even experienced divers fascinated. Visibility at the Yellow Stones is reliably excellent, making it one of the most photogenic dive sites on the coast. The combination of golden rock, colorful sponges, and abundant fish life in clear water produces underwater photographs with a distinctive warm palette that stands out from the typical blue-grey tones of most Mediterranean dive images. Photographers working with natural light find the site particularly rewarding, as the golden rock reflects and softens the sunlight in flattering ways. Sarıyarlar captures everything that makes Fethiye a world-class diving destination. The unique geology, excellent conditions, and thriving marine community create an underwater experience that is simultaneously beautiful, fascinating, and genuinely enjoyable.
