Cabrillo Beach is a popular and historically significant shore dive site at the tip of the San Pedro peninsula in Los Angeles — a site adjacent to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and Cabrillo Beach Park that offers beginner divers access to the marine environment of the outer Los Angeles Harbor in water depth reaching approximately 11 meters (about 36 feet). The site is protected by the San Pedro Breakwater to the north, which creates a degree of shelter that makes entry and exit conditions more predictable and manageable than open-coast sites, and the sandy-to-rocky bottom transition provides habitat variety within an accessible depth range. The marine environment at Cabrillo Beach reflects the transition zone between the harbor and the open Pacific: the inner breakwater side supports a community adapted to lower visibility and the proximity of harbor activity, while the outer side of the beach faces the more open waters of the San Pedro Channel with correspondingly better clarity and more diverse marine life. Bat rays are among the most commonly encountered and appealing species at Cabrillo, their flat, graceful forms gliding over the sandy bottom with effortless pectoral-fin undulations. Horn sharks rest in rocky areas during the day, their compact, spotted forms and distinctive horn-like spines in front of the dorsal fins making them one of the most recognizable and photogenic Southern California reef sharks. California scorpionfish lie in near-perfect camouflage on the rocky bottom. Kelp bass and various surf perch species work the transition zone between sandy bottom and rocky reef. Cabrillo Beach is an excellent training site for Los Angeles-area diving students and a convenient option for divers staying in the San Pedro/Long Beach area who want accessible ocean diving without an extended drive.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
