Long Point is one of the most topographically interesting shore dive sites on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, occupying a dramatic geographical feature where the peninsula extends furthest seaward and creates a complex set of underwater conditions — surge channels, current, and varied depth — that support an impressively diverse marine community. The point itself drops steeply into moderately deep water and generates conditions that can range from glassy-calm to quite challenging, which is why divers planning a Long Point excursion should check conditions carefully and have contingency options available. On good days, however, the site rewards the effort required with some of the richest diving on the peninsula. The entry is rocky — a scramble over boulders to open water — and the initial shallows can be surgy, but once past the first 15 to 20 feet conditions typically stabilize into the kelp forest and rocky reef zone where the most interesting diving occurs. Depths accessible within shore-diving range extend to about 50 feet, with the 20-to-40-foot zone offering the greatest variety of habitat and marine life. The topographic complexity of the site — multiple rocky ridges, sand channels, and boulder piles — creates the habitat heterogeneity that concentrates different species in predictable locations. Large sheephead stake out prominent reef features, their bulky adult forms impossible to miss. Giant sea bass — the critically important and recovering apex predator of Southern California waters — are occasionally encountered at Long Point, always a thrilling sighting given the species' rarity and impressive size. Lingcod occupy sandy edges and rubble zones with their patient predatory approach. California moray eels are resident throughout the reef. Garibaldi add their characteristic orange brilliance. The surge channels along the point support aggregations of purple sea urchins and various invertebrates, and provide dramatic swimming experiences on surge-active days when the water pulses back and forth through the rock passages.
