Mansfield Dam is one of the defining landmarks of the Highland Lakes region of central Texas — an impressive structure on Lake Travis that has created not only one of the area's primary recreational water bodies but also a diving destination that attracts Austin-area divers seeking accessible freshwater diving within reach of the state capital. The dam itself is a massive concrete structure constructed by the Lower Colorado River Authority in the 1940s, and the diving takes place in the deep, clear water on the downstream tailrace side of the dam as well as along the reservoir's lake-side shoreline near the dam structure. The water in the immediate area of Mansfield Dam tends to be among the clearest on Lake Travis — the released water from depth is typically cool and clear even during periods of surface algae growth that reduce visibility elsewhere on the lake. The rocky bottom and dam infrastructure provide more structural complexity than flat sandy lake beds, with the submerged dam footings, large boulders, and rubble providing ledges, crevices, and substrate for benthic species. Largemouth bass are the most visually prominent residents in the dam area, attracted to the structural complexity and the food supply generated by the dam's water releases. Striped bass also favor the dam's current zones, and can be seen hunting in loose, purposeful formations in the water column. Catfish — channel cat and flathead — occupy the deeper, slower zones beside the dam structure. The dive depth is moderate and appropriate for beginner divers, with most productive exploration occurring in 20 to 50 feet of water. Mansfield Dam and nearby Windy Point are typically visited together by Austin-area divers on weekend outings, the two sites providing complementary perspectives on Lake Travis' diving opportunities. The dramatic Hill Country landscape surrounding the dam makes the surface interval as pleasant as the dive itself.
