Windy Point Park is one of the most popular dive sites on Lake Travis — the long, slender Highland Lakes reservoir formed by Mansfield Dam on the Colorado River just northwest of Austin, Texas — offering beginner divers and training classes a convenient and reliably accessible freshwater diving destination within the Texas Hill Country. The site is located on the Windy Point peninsula that extends into the lake, with parking facilities and a well-organized shore entry that makes it one of the most diver-friendly access points on the entire lake. The entry involves walking into the water from a rocky shoreline, with the bottom transitioning from shallow rubble and rock to a graduated sandy and rocky bottom that descends to training-appropriate depths of 20 to 40 feet within comfortable shore-diving distance. Lake Travis' water clarity is impressive by Texas freshwater standards — during the clearest periods visibility can reach 20 to 30 feet, though algae blooms in late summer can reduce visibility significantly. Water temperature varies dramatically through the year, from the mid-50s Fahrenheit in winter to the upper 80s in summer, and the summer months when conditions are most comfortable also tend to have the largest diver population at the site. The resident fish community at Windy Point reflects the Highland Lakes ecosystem: largemouth bass are the most charismatic and easily observed species, their large profiles and deliberate movements making them excellent fish for beginning underwater observers. Striped bass, smallmouth bass, and sunfish species all inhabit the site. Catfish occupy the deeper, darker zones. Freshwater crayfish are abundant on the rocky bottom in the shallows. Windy Point's organized access, consistent conditions, and proximity to Austin make it the first ocean-equivalent diving experience for many Texas divers, and it remains a community gathering point for the Austin area dive community year-round.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
