The Valiant is an advanced wreck dive site off Santa Catalina Island — a vessel resting at approximately 34 meters (about 110 feet) on the sandy bottom near Avalon that provides Catalina-bound advanced divers with a compelling deep wreck experience in the characteristically clear waters surrounding the island. The wreck sits in the deeper zone of the Casino Point Underwater Park area, accessible exclusively to advanced divers with appropriate depth training who venture beyond the shallower recreational zones. At 34 meters, the Valiant sits at the limits of conventional recreational diving, and the combination of depth management, decompression awareness, and nitrogen narcosis potential requires that only well-prepared, experienced divers undertake the dive. The hull has been colonized over the years by the diverse encrusting life of Catalina's rocky subtidal zone — strawberry anemones, encrusting bryozoans, various sponge species, and the occasional California gorgonian all claim surface space on the wreck structure. Rockfish have made the Valiant their home in representative California deep-reef fashion: large ling cod with their formidable jaws and mottled camouflage occupy prime positions on the hull, while copper and vermilion rockfish cluster in the water column above. California scorpionfish rest in perfect camouflage against the encrusted metal surfaces — a reminder to maintain careful buoyancy and look before touching. Garibaldi reach the outer limits of their depth range here, their orange forms occasionally visible against the darker hull. The ambient light at 34 meters in Catalina's clear water provides enough natural illumination for unaided observation, though a dive light reveals the full color palette of the encrusting life. The Valiant offers advanced Catalina divers a technically engaging and ecologically rich experience that complements the shallower Casino Point diving.
