Ulua Beach is one of the premier beginner shore dive sites on Maui's South Shore — a beautiful crescent of sand in the Wailea resort area flanked by rocky headlands that create a natural entry point to the rich coral reef ecosystem of South Maui's increasingly celebrated diving corridor. The beach itself is among Wailea's most attractive, backed by swaying palms and fronted by clear, warm water with gentle wave action that makes entry and exit manageable for divers of all experience levels. The reef begins within a short swim from shore, with depths ranging from 10 feet at the beach edge to about 50 to 60 feet at the outer reef margins accessible on a typical dive. South Maui's coral reefs are in excellent health compared to many Hawaiian locations — decades of care and a relatively protected leeward position have preserved coral cover and species diversity at levels that continue to impress visiting divers. At Ulua Beach, the reef is characterized by diverse coral formations including large finger coral complexes, robust growth of lobe and plate corals, and the occasional stands of antler coral in the shallower zones. Hawaiian green sea turtles are the signature encounter at Ulua Beach, and as at other South Maui sites they are reliably encountered throughout the dive — resting on sandy patches between coral heads, grazing on algae attached to reef surfaces, and drifting slowly over the outer reef. Hawaiian cleaner wrasse stations maintain the reef's health at prominent coral heads where various fish queue for grooming. Moorish idols, fourspot and raccoon butterflyfish, and multiband butterflyfish add vivid color to the reef community. Moray eels — yellowmargin and whitemouth species — occupy their permanent crevice residences throughout the site. With calm conditions, good visibility, and consistent turtle encounters, Ulua Beach epitomizes the accessible, rewarding character of Maui shore diving.
