Cabritehorn Point is a St. John dive site situated on one of the island's rocky headlands, where the topography of the island meets the sea and creates the kind of varied underwater terrain — rocky point, adjacent sandy flats, and intermediate reef structure — that supports high marine life diversity at accessible depths. The name references the feral goats that have long inhabited St. John's rugged terrain, and the headland itself is a characteristic piece of the island's wild eastern coast. The dive at Cabritehorn Point takes advantage of the point's topographic effect on water movement. Rocky headlands in Caribbean island settings concentrate current, and this current concentration brings nutrients and food particles that filter feeders exploit and that in turn attract the predators that feed on filter feeders. At Cabritehorn Point, the fish aggregations around the point itself are typically the most active and diverse section of the dive, while the more sheltered flanks provide quieter terrain for observing smaller reef species and invertebrate communities. Coral formations at Cabritehorn Point include both the shallow-water species that tolerate greater wave action and temperature variation — massive and encrusting corals — and the more delicate branching species that develop in more sheltered areas away from the direct point exposure. The gradient from high-energy to sheltered habitat over a short distance creates a corresponding gradient in coral community composition that is ecologically interesting and visually varied. For beginner divers, the site provides enough variety and interest to occupy a full dive without venturing into conditions that require advanced skills. The point itself is best dived on calmer days when the current is moderate, and local operators time their visits accordingly. The fish life is characteristically St. John in its quality and diversity — all the standard Virgin Islands reef species are present, including the queen angelfish, French angelfish, and grey angelfish that make Caribbean reef diving so visually immediate, alongside the reef shark and turtle encounters that St. John's protected status makes more reliably available than at less protected Caribbean destinations.
