Ditliff Point is a dive site on St. John's southern coast, a rocky headland that creates the combination of mild current exposure, varied topography, and concentrated marine life that characterises the best of the island's accessible diving. The point sits within or adjacent to the marine protected zones that cover much of St. John's shoreline, and the fish populations here have the density and lack of fear that long-term protection produces. For beginner divers making their way through St. John's outstanding site list, Ditliff Point offers a solid and rewarding option on the south coast. The headland topography creates distinct diving zones on either side of the point. The shallower sections near the shore have the calm, garden-like quality of sheltered Caribbean reef — patch corals in excellent condition, sea grass beds in the sandy areas between formations, and the steady movement of reef fish through the coral architecture. Moving toward the point itself, the depth increases and the character becomes more energetic as the mild current that moves along this coast becomes perceptible. Coral health at Ditliff Point reflects St. John's protected status — the elkhorn coral recovery that has occurred on some protected Virgin Islands reefs is visible here in the shallow sections where this iconic branching species is re-establishing. Deeper, the massive coral formations — star coral, brain coral, and mustard hill coral — show the vigorous growth of reef communities that have not been severely degraded by the bleaching events and disease outbreaks that have affected more exposed or less protected reefs across the Caribbean. The fish communities at Ditliff Point are characteristic of a healthy, well-protected reef: large parrotfish in their vivid terminal phase colours, blue tang in feeding schools, queen triggerfish defending territories with theatrical posturing toward other fish and occasionally toward divers. The resident nurse sharks that use the sandy areas beneath overhangs are reliable company on most dives, their sleek forms blending with the sand until movement reveals them. For photographers, the point's mix of coral types and fish diversity provides an excellent day's work in accessible, well-lit conditions.
