Christmas Cove

Christmas Cove is one of St. Thomas's most charming and consistently popular dive sites, a sheltered cove between St. Thomas and Great St. James Island whose calm waters and productive reef have made it a favourite destination for local dive operators, live-aboard boats, and visiting divers who want a relaxed, beautiful Caribbean reef experience. The name alone creates a certain warmth of expectation, and the site rarely disappoints — Christmas Cove delivers the kind of Caribbean diving that reminds even experienced divers why they fell in love with the underwater world. The cove is naturally protected from the prevailing trade wind swells, creating a diving environment that is calm on the vast majority of days throughout the year. The water clarity is excellent — the enclosure of the cove reduces the wave energy that stirs up sediment in more exposed locations, and the absence of significant runoff from the adjacent shores keeps the water clean and clear. Visibility of 25 to 35 metres is typical, giving the whole dive a spacious, illuminated quality. The fish life at Christmas Cove is characteristically excellent. The cove's sheltered character has allowed a population of decidedly friendly and inquisitive fish to develop — southern stingrays are among the most frequently encountered, gliding across the sandy areas of the cove floor with fluid grace and approaching divers with the comfort of long familiarity. These rays are regularly fed by snorkellers from the boats anchored in the cove, creating a dynamic that produces close encounters but also raises questions about the ethics of fish feeding that conscientious divers debate. Beyond the stingrays, Christmas Cove hosts all the species that characterise a healthy, protected Virgin Islands reef: the full complement of angelfish, butterflyfish, and surgeonfish; resident nurse sharks in the deeper sections; sea turtles grazing in the grass beds. The coral formations on the cove reef are in good condition, with impressive brain coral formations and various sea fan species decorating the deeper sections. Christmas Cove is the kind of site that works equally well as a morning dive, a leisurely afternoon dive, or a night dive — the variety of conditions creating different but equally rewarding experiences at each visit.
