Coki Beach is St. Thomas's most accessible shore dive, a protected cove on the island's northeastern coast that offers beginner divers direct water entry from the beach into a reef environment that has been entertaining snorkellers and divers for decades. The beach sits adjacent to Coral World Ocean Park, and the combination of easy access, calm conditions, and consistent marine life makes Coki one of the most visited underwater sites in the US Virgin Islands — a familiarity that has not significantly diminished its quality. The reef begins just metres from the beach, the sandy bottom giving way to the first coral formations in the very shallow water that snorkellers explore above. For divers, the reef extends outward and downward to depths appropriate for beginner diving, with the most productive zones lying in the 8 to 15 metre range where the coral architecture is most complex and the fish communities are most diverse. The gradual slope profile means that there is no abrupt transition — divers can choose their depth within a continuous gradient of habitat from shallow to intermediate. Fish feeding has historically been practised at Coki Beach, and the result is a fish population that is extraordinarily confiding and approachable. The species that congregate around divers here — blue tang, queen and french angelfish, various wrasse species — approach closely enough to be photographed without any particular effort, making Coki one of the most reliably photogenic beginner sites in the Caribbean. Sergeant majors in their vivid black-striped yellow forms are among the most assertive, following divers in the expectation of food that more conscientious visitors decline to provide. The reef itself, despite the heavy visitor pressure, maintains a reasonable standard of coral health in sections away from the heaviest traffic. The moray eels and nurse sharks that hide in crevices and beneath overhangs are present and observable. Hawksbill turtles are reliable visitors to the Coki reef area. For a shore entry dive in the Virgin Islands that combines complete accessibility with genuine reef experience, Coki Beach remains the standard reference — the site where many thousands of visitors have made their first Caribbean scuba dives.
