The Navy Barges are one of St. Thomas's most accessible and family-friendly dive sites, a pair of former US Navy barges that were scuttled in the 1970s and now rest on the sandy seafloor at shallow depth, their combined footprint creating an artificial reef complex that hosts an impressive community of Caribbean marine life in water that is perfectly suited to beginner diving. The site is a favourite with dive operators introducing new divers to wreck diving, and the shallow, clear conditions make it equally popular with snorkellers who can see the barge shapes from the surface. The two barges rest close to each other, creating a dual-wreck site that allows divers to move between the structures within a single dive. Each barge has its own distinct character — the accumulated biological growth, the fish species distribution, and the structural details differ between the two in ways that repay exploration of both rather than focusing on one. The sandy bottom between and around the barges is habitat for its own community of flatfish, garden eels, and the stingrays that rest half-buried in the sediment. The marine colonisation of the Navy Barges is mature and dense, reflecting several decades of undisturbed development. Encrusting sponges cover the hull plating in overlapping sheets of colour. Sea fans extend from the barge deck fittings in fans calibrated to the mild current that occasionally moves through this area. Schools of glassfish pack the interior holds in numbers that defy easy counting — these baitfish masses attract the predatory species that make wreck diving dynamic: jacks, grouper, and barracuda that make periodic passes through the baitball in coordinated attacks. For beginner divers, the Navy Barges offer the complete wreck diving experience — the sense of exploring a human structure transformed by the sea, the marine life that artificial reefs concentrate, and the photogenic quality of sunken vessels in clear water — in a format that is genuinely accessible without sacrificing any of what makes wreck diving compelling. The shallow depth allows unlimited bottom time constrained only by gas supply, giving new divers all the time they need to explore at a relaxed pace.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
