Nudibranch Garden is a delightful macro diving site off Phu Quoc Island in the Gulf of Thailand — a section of reef in Vietnam's most celebrated island diving destination whose name celebrates the extraordinary diversity and density of nudibranchs and other colorful invertebrates that make this site particularly beloved by underwater macro photographers and reef naturalists. Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, located in the southwestern corner of the country near the Cambodian coast, and its surrounding waters are protected within the Phu Quoc National Park — one of Vietnam's most important marine conservation areas, whose protection has allowed the reef ecosystem to develop a richness not found in more heavily impacted sections of the Vietnamese coast. The nudibranch community at this site reflects the remarkable diversity of Indo-Pacific nudibranch fauna, which rivals any ocean basin for color, form, and number of species. Chromodoris, Hypselodoris, and Flabellina species in their electric blues, purples, and oranges provide an endless parade of macro subjects on the encrusted reef surfaces. Glossodorid nudibranchs with their distinctive gill plumes, Phyllidiidae with their bumpy textures and vivid patterns, and various rarer species reward patient, slow searching through the reef structure. Beyond the nudibranchs, the site offers the diverse Indo-Pacific reef ecology of the Gulf of Thailand: colorful reef fish communities, healthy coral formations in the shallower zones, and occasional reef sharks and sea turtles in the deeper sections. The beginner accessibility of the site — shallow depths and generally calm conditions — makes it excellent for macro photographers who need the stillness and time that complex invertebrate photography demands.
