Turtle Island is a rewarding dive site off Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam's Gulf of Thailand waters — a site whose name reflects the reliable presence of marine turtles that have made this section of Phu Quoc's protected reef their home, providing one of the most consistent and accessible sea turtle encounter opportunities in Vietnamese waters. Phu Quoc Island's marine environment has benefited substantially from protection within the Phu Quoc National Park, and the island's position in the relatively remote southwestern corner of Vietnam's coastline has insulated it from the heavy fishing and coastal development pressure that has impacted many other Vietnamese reef systems. The reef around Turtle Island features the diverse coral communities typical of the Gulf of Thailand's better-preserved sites: table coral, branching Acropora, massive Porites formations, and the encrusting corals that dominate the deeper zones all contribute to habitat diversity that supports an impressive range of reef species. Green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles are the defining encounters at this site, their reliable presence justifying the site's name and making every dive here a virtually guaranteed turtle encounter. The turtles rest on flat reef surfaces, graze on algae and sponges, and swim slowly through the coral formations with a grace and apparent indifference to divers that invites extended observation. The fish diversity around Turtle Island is characteristic of Gulf of Thailand reef systems: schools of fusiliers stream through the mid-water column in silver-and-yellow flashes; parrotfish graze noisily on the coral surface; and various grouper species occupy the shaded recesses. The beginner-accessible depth and calm conditions make this site perfect for divers at all experience levels visiting Phu Quoc's growing dive scene.
