Hon Tam is one of the most accessible and scenic dive sites in Nha Trang Bay — an island with a developed resort on its southern shore whose surrounding reef provides beginner-friendly diving at depths reaching approximately 12 meters (about 40 feet) in the warm, clear waters of the inner bay. Hon Tam (Silk Island) lies just a short boat ride from Nha Trang's waterfront, and its position within the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area ensures that the reef around the island benefits from the same conservation management that protects the entire bay's ecosystem. The diving around Hon Tam Island offers the characteristic Nha Trang Bay reef experience in one of its most accessible forms: clear water, diverse coral coverage, and the abundant Indo-Pacific reef fish community that has made this bay famous. The reef structure features the massive Porites bommies and branching coral formations typical of the inner bay zone, creating the architectural complexity that supports diverse species communities through the water column. Chromis and damselfish are universally present above the coral canopy in shimmering formations of electric blue and yellow. Butterflyfish pairs — ornate, vagabond, and teardrop species — work methodically over the coral surface. Parrotfish graze noisily. Moray eels occupy the reef crevices. The sandy areas between coral formations harbor cuttlefish in their extraordinary color-changing display and garden eels extending from their burrows in synchronized formations. Sea turtles make regular appearances at Hon Tam, the MPA protection having allowed a gradual increase in turtle sightings throughout the bay. The island's resort facilities make it a popular day-trip destination from Nha Trang for both divers and non-divers, with diving integrated into resort activities.
