Snoopy Island is arguably the most famous dive and snorkel site in the United Arab Emirates, located just offshore from Sandy Beach Hotel in Fujairah on the UAE's East Coast. Named for its uncanny resemblance to the beloved Peanuts character Snoopy lying on his back, this small rocky island has become an iconic landmark for water sports enthusiasts visiting the region. What makes Snoopy Island truly special is its accessibility. The island sits just a short swim from the beach, making it reachable without a boat - a rarity among quality dive sites. The shallow reef surrounding the island begins at just a meter or two of depth, gradually sloping to moderate depths around the island's perimeter. This makes it perfect for snorkelers on the surface and beginner divers below, while the deeper sections around the seaward side offer enough interest to satisfy experienced divers as well. The underwater landscape around Snoopy Island features rocky walls, coral gardens, sandy bottoms, and boulder fields, creating a diverse range of habitats within a relatively small area. Hard corals, brain corals, and table corals form the foundation of the reef ecosystem, while patches of soft coral add color to the walls and overhangs. The southern and eastern sides of the island tend to have the richest coral growth and the most abundant fish life. Marine encounters at Snoopy Island read like a wish list for underwater enthusiasts. Green and hawksbill turtles are the undisputed stars, with sightings on virtually every dive. Blacktip reef sharks occasionally patrol the deeper waters around the island. Schools of batfish, barracuda, and various species of ray are regularly spotted, alongside the usual complement of reef fish including angelfish, butterflyfish, surgeonfish, and parrotfish. The macro life is equally compelling, with nudibranchs, seahorses, and octopus hiding among the rocks and coral. Conditions at Snoopy Island are generally calm and forgiving. The island itself provides shelter from prevailing winds, creating a protected environment on at least one side regardless of conditions. Visibility ranges from 3 to 15 meters depending on conditions, with the best clarity during the cooler months from October through April. Whether you are taking your first breaths underwater or are a seasoned diver looking for a relaxed dive rich in marine encounters, Snoopy Island delivers an experience that perfectly captures why the UAE's East Coast has earned its reputation as a scuba diving destination.
