The Russian Wreck at El Pajar is a beginner dive of considerable charm: a vessel of Soviet-era origin that rested in the cove at El Pajar on Gran Canaria's southwest coast, its resting place in the sheltered, warm waters of the island's southern side making it one of the more accessible and pleasant wreck dives in the Canary Islands. El Pajar is a small cove and settlement on the southwest coast, its black volcanic sand beach and clear water typical of this particular section of Gran Canaria's shoreline. The vessel — a fishing or transport boat from the era when Russian and Soviet fleets worked the productive Atlantic waters off the African coast — has undergone the transformation that Gran Canaria's warm, clear water accelerates: from sunken vessel to living artificial reef, the steel hull colonised by the encrusting organisms that exploit every available hard substrate in these productive seas. Sponges cover the hull in coloured patches, sea squirts cluster in the more sheltered sections, and the encrusted silhouette of the vessel is recognisable but given new life by its biological covering. The wreck's accessible depth makes it ideal for beginners developing their wreck diving skills. The structure can be explored at a leisurely pace, with the vessel's outlines — deck, superstructure, hull — providing narrative interest and navigational reference throughout the dive. Large moray eels occupy the most enclosed sections, common octopus den in gaps in the hull plating, and schools of bream move through the open sections of the superstructure in the characteristic manner of fish using a structure as home territory. The surrounding sandy cove is worth exploring after the wreck: southern stingrays rest in the open sand, and the occasional angel shark might be found on the sandy sections between the wreck and the shore. El Pajar's calm cove conditions make this a reliable, enjoyable beginner wreck accessible year-round.
