La Herradura — the Horseshoe — is an intermediate El Hierro dive structured around a curved reef or geological formation that sweeps in the shape of its name, creating an enclosed, amphitheatre-like area that concentrates marine life and provides a contained, navigable environment within the broader La Restinga dive zone. The horseshoe's shape creates sheltered interior conditions alongside more exposed outer walls, giving the dive natural variation in character and wildlife across a single excursion. El Hierro's exceptional qualities are fully evident at La Herradura. The island's extraordinary water clarity — a product of its biosphere reserve status, minimal agricultural runoff, and the clean Atlantic water that surrounds it — means the full extent of the horseshoe's geometry is visible from any position within it, providing the kind of spatial understanding of a site's architecture that most dive destinations can only approximate. The basalt formations enclosing the horseshoe are encrusted with the dense, healthy marine communities that result from years of strict protection. The inner, sheltered area of the horseshoe is a productive garden: the enclosing arms of the formation create reduced current conditions, allowing the soft-bodied organisms that need calm water to feed — sea fans, hydroids, and the large anemones that decorate the rock in clusters — to flourish in abundance. Schools of bogues and bream circle in the protected interior, and the large dusky grouper characteristic of El Hierro occupy prominent positions on the reef formations with remarkable boldness. The outer face of the horseshoe's arms meets open water where the intermediate character of the site becomes apparent. Current can be noticeable here, and the depth is greater than in the sheltered interior. Angel sharks patrol the sandy transitions, and eagle rays occasionally appear in the open water beyond the outer reef edge. La Herradura's varied topography makes it one of the more rewarding intermediate sites in La Restinga, delivering the full range of El Hierro's exceptional diving in a single, well-structured dive.
