Punta de las Cañas — the Point of the Reeds — is a beginner dive site on El Hierro's south coast, its name suggesting the plant life of the headland above or the slender formations of the basalt rock below the waterline. Whatever its origin, the site shares the exceptional qualities of the entire La Restinga dive zone: the astounding water clarity, warm volcanic-influenced temperatures, and healthy marine life of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve operating at full protection. The point itself creates a natural feature in the underwater topography: where the headland meets the sea, the basalt formations change character, with the reef developing different aspects on either side of the point and the junction creating slightly more dynamic conditions than the fully enclosed bay offers. This makes Punta de las Cañas a step above the most sheltered beginner sites in terms of interest and variety, while remaining within comfortable beginner parameters in typical La Restinga conditions. The reef formations around the point are encrusted with El Hierro's characteristic dense marine community. The island's protection has produced sponge colonies of remarkable size and health, anemone carpets extending across sheltered rock surfaces, and the hard coral formations that establish themselves in El Hierro's unusually warm Canarian waters. The visibility that El Hierro consistently delivers — often thirty metres or more — transforms this community into a three-dimensional gallery visible in full from any position on the reef, a remarkable experience for beginners accustomed to lesser conditions elsewhere. Fish life around the point includes the schooling species that aggregate in productive coastal waters — bogues, bream, and the barracuda that hunt them in focused groups — along with the resident dusky grouper occupying territorial positions on the reef. The sandy areas in the lee of the point are promising ground for angel shark encounters, and a careful scan of the substrate between basalt formations is rewarded with sightings of these recovering, iconic sharks that make El Hierro diving genuinely unique in Europe.
