Punta Restinga is the geographic point at La Restinga — the southernmost tip of El Hierro, where the land ends and the Atlantic begins its uninterrupted sweep toward Antarctica. As a dive site, it combines the iconic quality of its location at the island's extremity with the beginner-accessible character of the broader La Restinga marine reserve, delivering the full El Hierro experience in conditions appropriate for those building experience. The point's geography creates natural underwater interest: the convergence of the two sides of the coastline at the tip changes the character of the reef, with the formations wrapping around the headland and providing exposure on multiple aspects. In the calm conditions of the Mar de las Calmas, this creates a varied dive rather than a demanding one — the point can be circumnavigated, or simply explored on its most sheltered side depending on conditions and preference. The basalt reef at Punta Restinga shares El Hierro's exceptional encrusting community, its surfaces densely colonised by the organisms that have flourished under biosphere reserve protection. The island's water quality — routinely thirty metres visibility, water temperatures running two to three degrees above the Canary Islands average — makes every feature of the reef visible in vivid detail, from the intricate structure of individual sponge colonies to the distant silhouettes of schooling fish in open water. It is the kind of visibility that makes the underwater world feel comprehensible in its entirety rather than glimpsed in fragments. Angel sharks, the icon of El Hierro diving, are possible on the sandy transitions between reef formations at Punta Restinga. Dusky grouper occupy prominent rock positions, approaching divers with the boldness that comes from generations of protection. The schools of bogues and bream that patrol the open water beyond the point, and the barracuda that cut through them, complete a tableau of healthy Atlantic island marine life at one of its finest remaining expressions.
