Punta Miradero — the Lookout Point — earns its name as a viewpoint in both terrestrial and underwater senses: from the surface, it commands views along El Hierro's southern coast, while beneath the waterline it offers the kind of open, expansive diving that justifies the lookout metaphor. This advanced site on El Hierro's southern coast pushes into deeper water and more exposed conditions than the beginner sites of La Restinga's protected bay, rewarding the experience required with wildlife encounters and geological drama proportionate to the commitment. El Hierro's exceptional qualities — extraordinary clarity, warm protected waters, world-class marine life under biosphere reserve protection — are all present at Punta Miradero, amplified by the greater depth and exposure that the advanced rating reflects. The basalt formations here descend more dramatically than at the sheltered inshore sites, with wall sections and drop-offs that exploit the visibility to create genuinely awe-inspiring underwater vistas. Looking outward from the wall face into forty metres of clear Atlantic blue water is an experience available in very few places in Europe. The advanced character emerges at depth and at the point's exposed southern position. Current can run along the outer face with sufficient force to require active management, and the depth range demands solid air consumption and experience with wall diving. Local guide knowledge is valuable for first visits, particularly for understanding the tidal patterns that determine current direction and strength. At depth, the species composition shifts toward larger, more open-water fauna: silky sharks have been reported in El Hierro's offshore waters, and the combination of clear water and productive conditions makes pelagic encounters more likely than at the sheltered inner sites. Eagle rays patrol the wall face regularly, and the large amberjack schools that characterise productive Atlantic island diving make energetic appearances. Angel sharks occupy the sandy sections at transitional depths, providing their characteristic extraordinary encounters even at this advanced site.
