Balcón de los Atunes — the Balcony of the Tunas — earns one of the most evocative names in Lanzarote diving through its association with the bluefin and yellowfin tuna that pass through the deep, productive waters visible from this exposed south-coast dive site. This is an advanced dive with a genuinely pelagic character: a wall or ledge formation that drops into the significant depths of the Canary Islands' Atlantic waters, creating the lookout position that makes the 'balcony' metaphor both visually and experientially accurate. Lanzarote's southern coast faces the open Atlantic with less shelter than the northern and eastern shores, and the dive sites along this coast reflect that exposure. Current is an active feature of diving here — the tidal flows that sweep past the southern tip of the island can run with significant force, and the experience to manage drift conditions is the prerequisite for getting the most from what the Balcón offers. When the current is running, this is effectively a drift dive along a wall of considerable vertical extent, with the associated requirements of managing buoyancy, position, and depth while observing the wildlife that the current delivers. The tuna for which the site is named appear seasonally, when Atlantic bluefin and yellowfin migration routes bring these magnificent animals through the Canarian waters. Seeing a school of large bluefin at depth — their torpedo bodies, their speed, the silver flash of scales in the Atlantic light — is one of the most exhilarating encounters available to recreational divers in European waters. The 'balcony' position of the wall or ledge that defines the site allows observation into the blue water column below, where these and other large pelagics move through depths accessible only to direct observation from the wall face. Beyond the tuna encounters, the Balcón's wall is encrusted with the productive Atlantic community of sponges and gorgonians, and the large grouper and barracuda that inhabit Lanzarote's southern dive sites provide reliable wildlife encounters in all seasons. An advanced dive with genuine pelagic ambition on one of the Canary Islands' most dramatic southern coasts.
