Costa Teguise is one of Lanzarote's principal resort areas, positioned on the northeast coast of the island where the terrain is somewhat different from the more sheltered southern resorts — the northeast faces the prevailing Atlantic trade winds more directly, and the diving here has a slightly more energetic character than the calm Papagayo and Puerto del Carmen sites. The dive site bearing the resort's name provides a beginner-accessible introduction to this section of the island's underwater coast. Lanzarote's northeast coast is influenced by the Canary Current more directly than the protected southern shore, producing water that can be slightly cooler and more productive in biological terms, with higher nutrient levels supporting a denser planktonic community. This productivity attracts the schooling species that follow food, and the baitfish schools above the reef at Costa Teguise are larger and more numerous than at comparable southern sites, with the associated attendance of predators — barracuda, amberjack, and the larger grouper — that exploit their presence. The volcanic basalt formations of the northeast coast have been shaped by the same geological forces as the rest of Lanzarote, but the swell and current exposure gives them a slightly different character: more irregular, more worn, and supporting an encrusting community adapted to the higher-energy environment. The sponge communities here are robust, the anemone clusters substantial, and the fish populations dense in a way that reflects the productive, current-influenced conditions. For beginner divers, Costa Teguise provides the accessible conditions — manageable depths, generally calm surface conditions within the resort area — combined with the genuine marine life encounters that make Lanzarote one of the Canary Islands' premier diving destinations. Sea turtles forage along this section of coast, and the schooling fish above the basalt formations provide the open-water experience that complements the reef's close-up invertebrate life. A solid introduction to the varied character of Lanzarote's northeast coast diving.
