Cueva de los Lagos — the Cave of the Lakes — is an advanced dive on Lanzarote's southern coast where a volcanic cave system contains the underwater features that give it its evocative name: interior spaces that may contain air pockets, pools of differing water character, or the specific geological formations that create a cave environment with the atmospheric quality of underground lakes. This is diving in Lanzarote's volcanic geology at its most dramatic, exploring formations created when the island's lava flows met the sea. The volcanic caves of Lanzarote's coastline are the underwater expression of the same geological processes that created the famous Jameos del Agua and Jameos Cave complex on the island's north coast — lava tubes formed by flowing basaltic rock that cooled on the outside while the interior remained fluid, creating long tunnels and chambers when the lava eventually drained. Coastal erosion and sea level change has opened some of these features to the ocean, and Cueva de los Lagos represents one of the more complex underwater cave systems accessible to divers in the southern dive zone. The advanced designation is fully warranted. The cave's interior sections involve overhead environment navigation, low light conditions that require dive torches, and the depth at which the system is accessed demands careful management of decompression exposure. Experience with cave or cavern diving is strongly recommended before attempting the deeper interior sections, and diving with a guide familiar with the system's specific geography is advisable for first visits. The geological features that give the cave its name — whether actual air pockets creating internal lakes, mineral formations resembling lake shores, or the specific acoustic and visual atmosphere of enclosed water-filled volcanic chambers — provide the dive with a character unique in the Lanzarote dive catalogue. The encrusting life on the cave walls is excellent, and the marine species that colonise these protected interior environments are rarely seen in open-water diving. A compelling advanced dive for experienced explorers.
