Baja Fría is an intermediate dive site off the western coast of El Hierro, reaching 30 meters depth at a volcanic underwater ridge. Named 'cold rock' for the thermoclines that can be felt at depth, this site features a dramatic volcanic formation where cool deep-water upwellings mix with warmer surface waters, creating nutrient-rich conditions that attract impressive marine life. Large groupers, barracuda, and schools of jacks are common, while the thermocline zone sometimes reveals deep-water species venturing into shallower territory. The walls support healthy gorgonian and sponge communities, and El Hierro's legendary visibility makes every encounter crystal clear.
