La Catedral is La Palma's most iconic dive site — a natural volcanic arch on the island's northwest coast whose vaulted chamber reaches 10 meters in height and creates an underwater cathedral of rock and blue light, its floor strewn with rounded volcanic pebbles and its interior walls densely colonized by Mediterranean and Atlantic reef species. The site combines the dramatic geology unique to the Canary Islands with exceptional visibility and a rich assembly of temperate-water marine life. Divers enter through the cathedral's seaward opening at 12-15 meters and pass through the vaulted interior, which extends roughly 20 meters in length. Shafts of sunlight penetrate through fissures in the ceiling, creating a blue-green cathedral effect that justifies the site's name. The walls and ceiling are covered in encrusting red sponges, delicate gorgonian fans, colonial corals, and populations of small reef fish that shelter from the open-water conditions beyond. Exiting onto the reef slope reveals a healthy coral and sponge community that descends to 30 meters. Marine life is characteristic of the northern Canary Islands' deep-water volcanic reefs. Barracuda schools patrol the reef edge, resident groupers and moray eels inhabit the rocky crevices, and trigger fish, parrotfish, wrasses, and damselfish populate the reef surfaces. Octopus are regularly observed on the volcanic terrain, and the cathedral's shaded interior hosts nocturnal species including cardinal fish, soldierfish, and hunting moray eels during dusk transitions. Loggerhead turtles occasionally visit the site, and dolphins pass by in the open water. La Catedral is accessible to Open Water divers — the swim-through has generous vertical clearance throughout and no restrictions or narrow passages. Reached by boat from Tazacorte or Puerto de Naos (10-15 minutes). Visibility 20-35 meters, water temperatures 19-24°C (warmer than northern Spain but cooler than the eastern Canaries). Best conditions May through November, with the calmest seas July-September. The site is a regular fixture on all La Palma dive itineraries.
