Biorock is a unique dive site near the Gili Islands off Northwest Lombok, featuring an innovative artificial reef created using the Biorock mineral accretion technology. Metal structures have been placed on the seabed and subjected to low-voltage electrical currents that accelerate coral growth, resulting in thriving coral colonies that have established themselves significantly faster than natural colonization. The site serves as both a marine conservation project and a fascinating dive, where visitors can observe the steel frameworks now heavily encrusted with healthy hard and soft corals teeming with juvenile fish. Seahorses, frogfish, and nudibranchs have colonized the structures, making this an excellent macro dive. The shallow depth and calm conditions welcome beginners, while the conservation story adds an educational dimension. Biorock demonstrates that innovative science and diving tourism can work hand in hand to restore and protect Indonesia's precious coral reef ecosystems.
